Life with Chickens

So we've learned a few lessons about raising chickens, and really there aren't as many lessons as I thought there'd be and they're pretty minor.

Lesson 1- chickens grow fast. We got the chickens in December knowing that we would have to keep them inside for awhile. We kept them in our laundry room which is pretty big and out of the way. Well, the first box we had them in lasted about 2 weeks then they started to fly up and perch on the ledge. So the kids and I went dumpster diving and found a washer box thinking that we cut it high enough and it was big enough. Well, that lasted about 2 weeks. Photobucket
So Chris got online and searched for the perfect coop. And thanks to Chris after 3 FULL days of building it we had the perfect chicken coop and the chickens were ready to go outside!

Lesson #2 Only the professionals can tell a rooster chick from a hen chick, and the guy we got ours from is NOT a professional...
So just a minor problem, its illegal in Arvada to have roosters and we don't really want fertilized eggs. The kids want to sell him, Chris wants to behead him...

Lesson #3 we love our chickens- they roam the yard all day, they're teaching the kids responsibility, they're fertilizing our lawn and hopefully in about a month they'll be giving us farm fresh, free range, omega3 (that might be stretching it) eggs
